東京・下北沢の BONUS TRACK GALLERY 2 で開催されたアート展「海と煙が出会う場所」は、バングラデシュ・マタバリの美しい沿岸コミュニティに暮らす人々が、海と共に営んできた生活を紹介し、その暮らしや周辺環境がマタバリ1石炭火力発電所の建設によってどのように変わってしまったのかを伝える物語です。
The art exhibition “Where the Smoke Meets the Sea,” held at BONUS TRACK GALLERY 2 in Tokyo, tells the story of the beautiful coastal Bangladesh communities in Matarbari and Moheshkhali and how the construction of the Matarbari 1 coal power plant has adversely impacted their lives and the environment around them.
本展示では、海面上昇の影響や日本の国際協力機構（JICA）が支援するエネルギー計画のもとで進められる、さらなる大規模なLNG（ガス）火力発電プロジェクトがこの地域を脅かしている現状も取り上げています。その中でも、コミュニティの人々が示してきた希望、強さ、そして回復力に焦点を当てています。
It also highlights the hope, strength and resilience this community has shown in the face of rising sea levels and further construction of fossil gas projects under the Bangladesh MIDI plan, which is supported by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
本展のためにバングラデシュから来日した写真家 Noor Alam 氏と映像作家 Suman Kanti Paul 氏は、作品展示とトークイベントを通して、長年記録し続けてきたコミュニティや自然環境の変化、そして自身の経験を来場者の皆さんに伝えました。
Noor Alam氏は、「（石炭火力発電所によって、）何千人もの人々が生計を失った。また、コヘリア川は流れを失った。」とコメントしました。
Photographer Noor Alam and filmmaker Suman Kanti Paul, who travelled from Bangladesh for the exhibition, shared with visitors their photography and video documenting the community over many years, their personal experiences and changes in the natural environment.
長年バングラデシュでの課題に取り組んできた、日本の環境NGO・JACSESの喜多満里花氏とマーケット・フォースのMunira Chowdhury氏も登壇し、JICAや日本企業の関与とその問題点について解説しました。
Marika Kita from the Japanese environmental NGO JACSES and Munira Chowdhury, director from Market Forces —who have both long worked on climate and human rights concerns in Bangladesh—emphasise concerns about the role of Japanese corporations, JICA's involvement, and the challenges communities face.
Munira Chowdhury氏は、「ガス火力発電所に充てられる予定の360億米ドルを使えば、バングラデシュに62ギガワットのクリーンエネルギーを構築できる」と訴えました。
Munira Chowdhury said, “US$36 billion earmarked for gas plants could instead build 62 Gigawatts of clean energy in Bangladesh.”
先住民族の人権問題に取り組む衆議院議員・上村英明氏からは、力強い連帯のメッセージが寄せられました。
「世の中にはお金にはならないけど大事な仕事があるということを、皆さんに学んでいただければと思います」
A message of solidarity was also delivered by Hideaki Uemura, a member of Japan’s House of Representatives who works on Indigenous peoples’ rights.
"We hope everyone will learn that there are important jobs in this world that don't make money."
展示会のキュレーターを務めたマーケット・フォースの北野久美子氏は、化石燃料開発と気候災害の影に暮らしながら、大きな困難を乗り越えてきたバングラデシュのコミュニティの強さと勇気に敬意を表しました。
「この展示が、開発と自然の交差点、そこに伴う課題について議論し、私たちが共に築きたい未来について考える機会になることを願っています」
The exhibition's curator, Kumiko Kitano from Market Forces, expressed admiration for the strength and courage of the Bangladeshi communities who overcoming huge hardships, living in the shadows of the fossil fuel developments and climate disasters.
“I hope this will be an opportunity to discuss the intersection of development and nature, the challenges involved, and to think about the future we wish to build together.”
参加者の一人であり、デザイナーの平山みな美氏は、写真と映像によるアート展を評価し、コメントしました。
「このプロジェクトに関わっているJICAや日本企業が考えを変えて、バングラデシュの地元の人々を本当に助けられる別の開発方法に転換してくれることを心から願っています。」
Designer, Minami Hirayama, who attended the exhibition, emotionally commended the photographic and video art installations.
"I really hope that JICA and other Japanese companies who are part of this project would change their mind and shift towards another kind of development that actually helps local people in Bangladesh".
展示やイベントに参加された来場者の方々からは、「開発」という名のもとに日本でも失われてきた命や暮らし、ご自身の経験を共有いただき、意義深い国境を越えた対話とつながりが生まれました。こうした声や交流が生まれたことを、とても心強く思い、非常に感謝しています。
Visitors to the exhibition and participants in the event shared their own stories—including experiences of lives and communities lost in Japan in the name of "development".
These conversations sparked meaningful cross-border dialogue and connection. We are deeply encouraged and grateful for the voices and exchanges.
映像作家の Suman Kanti Paul 氏 自身が経験した環境被害について共有し、石炭やガス火力発電所への投資よりも、クリーンエネルギーへの緊急支援が必要だと訴えました。
「日本はこれまでずっとバングラデシュの友であり、これからも友であり続けてほしい。」
Suman also says that rather than investing in coal and gas power plants, there must be urgent support for clean energy.
バングラデシュで進められるさらなるガス拡張プロジェクトを推進するJICA、住友商事、JERAに責任を果たさせるため、共に声を上げませんか。
